With deep gratitude and hearts grounded in prayer, we share the formal announcement of the episcopal consecration of our Rector, Rev. Fr Ashley R. Deutschmann. The consecration will take place on Pentecost Sunday, 24 May 2026, in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Fr. Ashley continues to serve as Rector of the Apostolic Old Catholic Mission, a small but growing community rooted in the early Church’s values of sacrament, simplicity, and inclusion. His episcopal name will be Mar Theophilos (meaning friend of God), reflecting a ministry of humble service, companionship, and theological depth.
Consecration Details
The episcopal consecration will be conferred within the historic episcopate by bishops whose sacramental orders are documented and traceable.
This sacred act reflects the collegial character of apostolic ministry and the spiritual unity of churches and clergy committed to sacramental life, apostolic faith, and shared mission.
A Ministry Formed in Unity
Bishop-Elect Ashley was ordained to the priesthood using the Byzantine rite under the authority of the Bulgarian Old Catholic Church. His ordination decree was issued in Latin, using the Western form. This convergence of Eastern and Western traditions — East in sacramental form, West in canonical expression — reflects a deep theological conviction: that the Church is one in Christ, and its historic expressions are not divided paths, but shared apostolic witnesses.
This same conviction undergirds his upcoming consecration — a celebration not of personal honour, but of ecclesial service.
Episcopal Name and Motto
Upon consecration, Fr Ashley will take the episcopal name Mar Theophilos, meaning “Friend of God.” This name, rooted in the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles, reflects a ministry grounded in friendship, learning, spiritual companionship, and trust in divine mercy.
His chosen motto is:
Defensor fidei extra muros
Defender of the Faith Outside the Walls
Inspired by Hebrews 13:12–13, this expresses a vocation to serve beyond the boundaries of power and convention — among the excluded, the overlooked, and the seeking.
Episcopal Coat of Arms
A personal episcopal coat of arms has been prepared to reflect the theological, spiritual, and pastoral character of Bishop-Elect Ashley (Mar Theophilos). While it follows traditional heraldic structure, its meaning is drawn from the heart of Christian life: Christ-centred, sacrificial, steadfast, and apostolic.
Each quadrant carries deep significance:
- The Chi-Rho and crossed keys (upper left) proclaim Christ at the centre of life, ministry, and worship, while also expressing apostolic stewardship and the Church’s responsibility to bind and loose in truth, mercy, and pastoral care.
- The Agnus Dei (upper right) symbolises Christ the Sacrificial Lamb, speaking of redemption, resurrection, and victory through self-offering love. It reflects a ministry shaped by humility, fidelity, and service rather than power.
- The white elephant (lower left) signifies strength joined to gentleness, dignity joined to peace, and memory joined to wisdom. It speaks of patient endurance, steadfast service, and quiet strength in ministry, and may also be read in light of the bishop-elect’s South African roots.
- The ichthys (lower right), one of the earliest Christian symbols, proclaims Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour. It reflects discipleship, baptism, evangelisation, and spiritual nourishment, and points to a vocation marked by simplicity, faithfulness, and presence among ordinary people.
The motto, Defensor fidei extra muros — “Defender of the Faith Outside the Walls” — expresses a call to pastoral presence beyond institutional boundaries, grounded in Hebrews 13:12–13. A green galero, gold cross, and scroll complete the traditional structure, linking the bishop-elect to the living and apostolic Church.
